TOUR ITINERARY

(The walks mentioned below in the programme will be towards the next destination)

Day 1 - On arrival, guests will be met at the airport and driven to Sigiriya.



Optional excursion to visit the Sigiriya Rock Fortress & frescoes. The Ancient city of Sigiriya was designated a cultural World Heritage Site in 1982. It is also proposed that this site should be named the eight wonder of the world. The topography of the area is flat except for the massive rock outcrop of the fortress itself, and a few distant hills. The wonder is that this massive rock outcrop has a flat top and the wonder of wonders is that this flat top, about three quarters of an acre in extent, was used in its entirety to build the kings complex, which fact is evident by the presence of ruins. The Walk from the gate to the summit of this gigantic rock is about 2-1/2km.
Dinner & overnight at hotel Sigiriya.

Day 2.

After breakfast the trek is from Sigiriya to “Konduruwana”, which is village on the Girithale/Bakamuna road [Approx 12.5km –Approx 4 hours]. This small track falls through the forest and the trek would be cool and adventurous. The trek is coupled with a further 2-hour walk along road [8km] towards Giritale. Dinner & over night at a hotel in Giritale or Polonnaruwa

Day 3.

Visit to the Ancient city. – Description about Polonnaruwe.

After site visits start the trekking tour from Polonnaruwa, along the ancient Tank named the “Parakrama Samudraya”. This stretch of the road about 8km along bank of Tank is beautiful and the environment pleasant up to “Angamedilla” [South West] From this up to “Kottapitiya”on the Grithale/Bakamuna road the trek will be along the along the “Amban Ganga”[river] and the rest through paddy fields and village [18km/5-1/2hours]
Dinner and overnight at Campsite near Kottapitiya.

Day 4

After breakfast drive up to Illukkumbura in the Knuckles area. The trek from Illukkumbura to Riverston would be along wondrous road, traversing five major vegetation types from Dry zone forest to montane pygmy forest at Riverston, including dry patana grassland. “Pitawala Patana”, the grassland is the largest dry patana grassland in the island and offers an excellent viewpoint in Knuckles area. Lunch in the forest. Stay over in a Hotel at Kandy.

Day 5

The drive, after breakfast to a half way point in “Nuwara Eliya”via Kandy, is indeed a memorable one. Nuwara Eliya, cradled in central hill country is about the most attractive area of the island. The walk for the day, 6 hours and 20-24km, in the cool climes, along plantation roads, jeep tracks and main roads will be an unforgettable experience. Dinner & overnight stay in Hotel in “Nuwara Eliya”

Day 6

A drive up to the Horton Plains (Maha Thenna), after breakfast, is for another very interesting trek, the trek across the Horton Plains. The Horton Plains is most certainly one of the world’s best nature reserves, which consist of famous “World’s End”, Bakers Falls”, “Chimmini Pool” etc. This largest wet grassland in the country with an extent of 10,000ha is haunted by Elk, Deer, Giant Squirrel, Wild Boar, Wild Hair, Porcupine, and a variety of Migratory birds, which is unique to this region. At the end of our hike across the Horton Plains, we come to another vary important and famous point - the World’s End. With a sheer drop of 3700ft, World’s End offers one a fantastic and awesome view. Down below, one is greeted, by the beautiful view of the sprawling tea estate laced with gravel roads and line rooms, and if one looks beyond, by breathtaking panoramic view of the southern part of the island down to the coast. Lunch at World’s End. Need to include the trek to BHY via Bambarakanda here Dinner & overnight in Camp in Belihuloya.

Day 7

At leisure at the camp or engage in optional activities that are available. [ Canoeing / Cycling / Birding / Village visits.] Leave by vehicle, after an early dinner at Belihuloya, to “Maskeliya” at the base of the “Samanala Kanda” to begin the arduous 08km/6hr climb to Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak), via “Bogowanthalawa”. Begin the climb to the misty mountaintop with experienced local guides. You may reach the 2,240 metre high peak - the island’s fourth highest - at Midnight/dawn to witness a glorious sunrise and the mountain’s shadow, cast by the rising sun on to the clouds below. Over night at the Peak. [Very primitive facilities with sleeping bags]

Day 8

After witnessing the great spectacle of sunrise and breakfast, trek down hill along a different route (10km 7 hours) where clients will be picked up at Rathnapura road entry point and driven to a Hotel in Ratnapura. Dinner and overnight at Hotel in Ratnapura.

Day 9

After breakfast leave for Negombo by Coach. Clients will be dropped off en-route where they will trek approx 20km /4hours via rubber plantations, which will be a different the walker a different sensation. It gives one a feeling that one walks through a forest, but not quite. Dinner and overnight at a hotel in Negombo.

Day 10
After breakfast at leisure or drive to Airport.
You have an option of coupling this with a beach stay of 4/5 days.

Backup vehicles for all trekking routes where possible with communication eqipment. Providing all First Aid and emergency crisis management plans at all trekking routes. Experienced / Trained trackers + Locale guides for all trekking routes in keeping with the 1:5 ratio. [One tracker for 5 clients] Professional Naturalist through out the tour. English Speaking Team Leader through out the tour. Packed lunch from day 2 to day 9 [including those two days] Entrance fees to Horton Plains.
